Observe SLJ Day with 'Pulp Fiction'

Don't believe there was a Samuel L. Jackson Day in Shreveport? Believe it.

And celebrate it Monday at the Robinson Film Center with a screening of "Pulp Fiction."

When? 7:30 p.m. Monday (March 9).

Eats? Big Kahuna burgers and $5 milkshakes.

RFC is dusting off some other dandies, too: On Friday, "Citizen Kane" opens. Ever heard of it? On March 27, the monthly Friday Night Freakout breaks out the Wii bowling for "The Big Lebowski." Dude. ... Correction: The Dude.

I wasn't around when this holiday was first announced, but I wonder if I'm the only one that thinks it's stupid.

I mean you can't go around giving every person who inspires children their own holiday. Nor every celebrity that comes to Shreveport. I think especially if they're living celebrities, then they don't need holidays. Hollywood egos don't need any more attention. And it also overshadows the people who aren't celebrities that do just as much if not more. I know people in Shreveport that inspired me as a kid and they don't have holidays. It honestly just sounds more to me like the mayor was sucking up to a celebrity he idolizes...maybe hoping to bring him back every year to celebrate...at his house.

It really only seems like the RFC can celebrate it too. But it's funny because most Sam Jackson movies don't represent him in the way he's being commemorated by our city. In a way isn't the Pulp Fiction Sam Jackson sort of the opposite of the inspiring kids Sam Jackson? Not that there's really a more appropriate Sam Jackson movie...which is the point. I wonder if 50 Cent came and gave a talk to kids about staying in school, if he would get a holiday too.

But I can't blame the RFC for taking advantage of such a ridiculous holiday. Like I said they're probably the only ones that can.

It isn't a holiday. You'll still get your mail. It's just a proclamation, and in all honesty, it IS meant to be sort of ridiculous and fun. How many cities can say that they have a Samuel L. Jackson Day? This kind of quirky, offbeat celebration is what gives a city an identity, and I'm proud to be a part of that. I love Shreveport and it gives me no end of satisfaction to see it becoming cooler and more fun to live in all of the time. I'm glad that we're celebrating SLJ Day - my only regret is that I didn't make stickers, so that when Shreveporters drive to other cities, people behind them in traffic could say "Why don't WE have an SLJ Day?" I realize that it's not for everyone, but I also would defend it as more than a silly idea - I believe that this kind of thing gives a city a personality. Who knows, I could be wrong.

Best wishes,

Until we have an AGK Day -- who can guess my middle name? -- the world is not ready for peace.

I know your secret AGK. That "G" is no mystery to me...

But SLJ Day will be a hoot. I haven't seen Pulp Fiction on the big screen since it came out more than a decade ago. And I will happily pay for a $5 milkshake. Just some fun!

Now, if this were to be some sort of serious venture... that would be different. But I always took this (by the city and the RFC) as tounge in cheek fun. Cheers to Chris Jay and the RFC for giving us a chance to have a good time and see memorable cinema.

PS. The "G" is followed by an "a."

Well, to me it's that it just seems really kitschy. And while it gives Shreveport personality, I sense it as a kitschy personality that's not really desirable. To me it makes Shreveport just seem sort of giddy about it's celebrity guests, which just feels unprofessional rather than cool or braggable.

...which is weird because I'm usually for quirky and offbeat identities over professionality, but for some reason this bugs me.

Wait!

Do I get a prize for writing the middle name? Or is the prize for not writing it?

Evan, is it as kitschy as the Neon City that Shreveport once desired to be?

ltlrat said...

Lol, close. I think neon is better than a specific actor, who almost has a kitschy reputation of his own (i.e. Snakes on a Plane).

Neon has more potential in it's broadness...and aren't the 80s coming back?
