Best actor contenders will slug it out on weekend screens

"The Wrestler" opens Friday at the Regal Cinemas Louisiana Boardwalk 14. Here's hoping that Mickey Rourke's comeback lives up to the hype, but methinks he has some serious competition on Oscar night. ...

"Milk" opens Friday at the Robinson Film Center. It's nearly impossible to bet against a great Sean Penn performance, especially when it's attached to a project that features a wealth of talent.

Which actor will bring home the Oscar for best actor? (Or are you predicting an upset?)

I am very conflicted about this. Rourke deserves it for his awe-inspiring performance. But Penn deserves it for being a bright spot in a second-tier film.

It takes talent to resurrect a career. But it also takes talent to rescue a mediocre biopic.

My thinking that this tight race between these two and Pitt has narrowed to just these two. I still think Rourke has the lead, but that may change.

The more I think about the film, the more I think my favorite performance in "The Wrestler" was actually Marissa Tomei's. There's this one particular scene - I don't to spoil it - that just had me awestruck. She's amazing in this movie, even though she's given very little to work with.

I think Leonardo DiCaprio should have been nominated for Revolutionary Road...and would then have my vote to win.

I don't think there's anything special about Sean Penn's role, except it's a gay movie and award shows eat those up. It really wasn't a great movie IMO. Man, and Josh Brolin getting nominated for it was a joke. He's barely in it and barely has to do anything when he is in it. It's been a while since I've noticed such a political nomination. He's hot shit right now.

The Wrestler was more unique and better, but I can't get over the fact that Mickey Rourke just seems like he's playing himself in that role and it's not necessarily outstanding acting.

Leo DiCaprio on the other hand I think did a fantastic job acting the crap out of his character in "Revolutionary Road" (as did Kate Winslet). I think that movie got gypped. It's my favorite Oscar type movie of the year behind Slumdog.

Yay! FINALLY, Milk comes to town! I thought I was only going to be able to see it in the Bay area!
